MMDA footbridge along EDSA costs P10 million

The unfinished footbridge along EDSA-Kamuning in Quezon City, which has gone viral online because of its surprising height, costs P10 million pesos.

“Yes, it is [worth] P10 million. Kasama kasi [sa cost ang] solar powered lights [ng footbridge],” MMDA spokesperson Celine Pialago told GMA News Online.

The EDSA footbridge, which will open to public on November 15, appears to be too high for pedestrians to use, especially for the elderly, pregnant women, and persons with disabilities (PWDs).

However, Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said that the new footbridge is safe and was approved by competent engineers.

“It is safe. Hindi ko alam kung saan nanggagaling ‘yung kumento ng ating mga kababayan na ‘di [siya] safe,” added Pialago.

A photo of the footbridge was originally uploaded by user Macky Fernando on Facebook last October 2.

MMDA General Manager Jojo Garcia said the footbridge was necessary to prohibit pedestrians from being run over by vehicles that cross EDSA.

He added that MMDA cannot cut down its height because it needs to be three to four meters above the power lines of the MRT-3 for safety reasons.
