Meet the first Emirati woman to win Mother Teresa Award

Entrepreneur Nashwa Al Ruwaini is the first Emirati woman to ever receive the Mother Teresa for Social Justice 2018.

The accolade was awarded by Tushar Arun Gandhi, a descendant of Mahatma Gandhi, in the presence of the UAE Consul General in Mumbai Mohammad Al Jalah Al Tunaiji this week in Mumbai, India.

Al Ruwaini won the award for her philanthropic efforts in improving the condition of women and children in the Middle East through her charitable activities in the Nashwa Foundation, according to a report by WAM.

She is currently a board member and CEO of Pyramedia Group. Al Ruwaini is also the chairwoman of the Nashwa Foundation, a philanthropic charity that does charitable activities across the Arab states.

“It is such a great honour to win this accolade, which I am extremely proud of. It is very dear to my heart. Mother Teresa is one of my favourite role models. I aspire to be just as charitable and this award serves as a reminder that I need to continue my philanthropic work, which is just as important as my professional career,” she said.

The ceremony, organized by the Harmony Foundation, followed the theme “Protect Her Empower Her” for the empowerment of women.

“I believe that it is my role and purpose to always give back to the community, especially to women and young girls, so that they can lead healthy lives and not be subjected to any form of oppression or injustice. I will continue to work towards this goal, especially in the Middle East,” Al Ruwaini added.

The Mother Teresa Awards are given to individuals or organizations that promote peace, equality and social justice.
