NAIA Terminal 2 rehab to begin next week

The rehabilitation of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 2 is set to begin next week, the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) announced.

MIAA general manager for Engineering Ric Medalla said that the construction of the offices to be used by the contractors and consultants began as early as last month.

The rehabilitation process of the airport, meanwhile, will begin next week.

“The contract for this project is for one and a half years, so we expect the rehabilitation to be finished by that time,” Medalla said.

Among the constructions to be done at the airport include improving several areas in the airport and expanding the lobby at the north and south arrival areas. The rehabilitation process will cost Php601 million.

The rehabilitation process also seeks to address problems in passenger congestion and rationalization of flights.

Despite being initially designed to cater only to domestic flights, the airport is also being used for international flights which is seen to be one of the reasons for the congestion at the airport.

“It was not even designed to have a section for the Bureau of Immigration, as well as a Duty-Free store,” said MIAA Media Affairs Division head Jess Martinez.
