A British academic has been charged by UAE prosecutors with spying, five months after he was arrested.

Matthew Hedges is a doctoral student at Durham University and was arrested at Dubai airport at the end of his two-week study trip in the country, reported Reuters.

He was reported to have been researching on the impact of the Arab Spring on the UAE’s foreign policy and security strategy.

The attorney general of UAE confirmed that Hedges has been charged with spying for and on behalf of a foreign state. The UAE government said in a statement that Hedges “jeopardizes the military, economy, and political security of the UAE”.

Investigators had gathered pertinent evidences against Hedges through his electronic devices and intelligence from UAE security agencies.

The accused appeared at a court in Abu Dhabi last week after a hearing earlier this October.
