KNOW THE LAW: Should your employer cover the expenses for your work-related injury?

DUBAI: Workers who sustain injuries in the conduct of their tasks are entitled to free cost of recovery to be shouldered by their employers.

This, according to the Government of Dubai’s Permanent Committee of Labour Affairs, which has recently launched an innovative handbook, entitled “A Guide for Foreign Workers.”

The handbook contains the labor laws of the UAE, as well as the rights and duties of professionals working in the country.

Included in the handbook is Article 144 of the UAE Labor Law, which states that it is the employer’s obligation to cover all expenses until the employee has fully recovered from his work-related injury. This means that expenses including hospitalization and surgical expenses, costs of x-ray, medical tests, and medicines should all be covered by the employer.

The UAE Labor Law states:

“In cases of occupational injuries or diseases, the employer shall undertake to pay the cost of the treatment of the worker in a governmental or private local medical centre until his recovery”

In addition, the employer should also provide for the employee who suffered from a work-related injury a financial compensation equivalent to his full salary in the time of treatment and recovery.

If you are facing any workplace issues, you can call the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation – 8006647354.
