Eating a bag of crisps, chewing gum, and drinking water or coffee on public transport, whether on the Metro or buses, can get a passenger fined as the UAE maintains keenness on observing cleanliness.
In Dubai, chewing gum on public transport is strictly prohibited and violators are asked to pay Dh100. This rule does not only apply inside all public transports in the emirate, as the same rule applies in bus shelters.
In 2014, a Filipina was fined Dh100 by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) for chewing gum inside one of RTA’s air-conditioned bus shelters. She explained that she did not know that the rule also covers bus shelters and not only public transport. However, there’s an important legal principle that says “ignorance of the law is no excuse.” So, no one can’t defend his/her actions by arguing s/he didn’t know about it.
In Dubai Metro, once you step foot inside the train, any food and drink is not allowed, including water and chewing gum. It does not end there as disposing of your chewing gum is another story.
In September 2018, Dubai Municipality reminded residents and visitors to avoid throwing chewing gum on roads and other public places to avoid paying a fine of Dh500 as per local order No.11 of 2003.
Littering, in general, is punishable by Dh500, Dh1,000, or Dh1,500 depending on the degree of the offense.
List of Dubai Metro violations and fines
The Road and Transport Authority released a list bearing the violations and its corresponding fines when riding the Dubai Metro.
Here’s the list of offenses and fines that await offenders (translated in Filipino):
MULTA: AED100
1. Pagdudulot ng abala o purwisyo, sa mga pasahero
2. Pagpasok sa mga pribadong espasyo o pag-okupa sa mga upuan na nakalaan sa mga partikular na pasahero
3. Pagpapatong ng paa sa mga upuan
4. Pagkain at pag-inom sa loob ng metro at sa ibang ipinagbabawal na lugar
5. Paggamit ng elevator o escalators sa maling paraan
6. Pag-akyat o pagtalon sa loob ng metro o sa istasyon
7. Pagsuway sa mga alituntunin ng RTA sa paggamit sa mga pasilidad sa metro
8. Pagpasok sa mga ipinagbabawal na lugar sa istasyon ng metro
9. Pagbubukas ng pinto o pagbabalak bumaba habang umaandar ang metro
10. Pagdadala ng anumang hayop sa metro, maliban na lang sa mga asong gumagabay sa may kapansanan sa mata
11. Pagdadala o paggamit ng mga kagamitang magdudulot ng gulo o magiging banta sa kaligtasan ng mga pasahero
12. Pagtayo o pag-upo sa paligid at loob ng metro na hindi nakalaan para sa mga pasahero
13. Pagparada ng sasakyan sa espasyong nakalaan sa mga pasahero sa mahigit na 24 oras
MULTA: AED200
1. Pasakay sa metro nang walang ‘valid ticket’
2. Paggamit ng ‘personalized travel cards’ na pagmamay-ari ng iba
3. Hindi pagsunod sa utos ng inspektor o awtorisadong opisyal ng RTA
4. Paggamit ng ‘expired’ o ‘invalid’ Nol card
5. Pagbebenta ng Nol card nang walang pahintulot ng RTA
6. Pagdura, pagkakalat, o pagdudumi sa loob ng pampublikong transportasyon at sa paligid nito

1.Pagtulog sa ‘waiting area’ o masisilungan sa anumang bahagi ng istasyon

1.Paggamit ng pekeng NoI card o NoI ticket
2.Pagsira, pagsusulat, o pangingialam sa mga aparato o kagamitan ng metro o istasyon
