Daughter of OFW couple bags Burjuman singing tilt

DUBAI – Described by peers as a “natural born singer,” a daughter of an overseas Filipino couple working in the UAE bagged the recent BurJuman’s Rising Stars championship, taking home as well a Dh25,000 school scholarship that she hopes to use on her plans to pursue a career in medicine.

Sixteen-year-old Katrina Casia’s winning piece was a cover of Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” by X Factor Philippines 2012 winner KZ Tandingan. By her parents’ account, Katrina was already singing entire songs through the karaoke when she was three; at seven she was joining singing competitions during which she got her first victory performing the famous Filipino song, Hawak Kamay.

Following this, she has participated in numerous competitions wherein she has won more awards, likewise always landing in the top 10 for finals.

She was a grand finalist at the DFC Kidstar Z S4 2015, winner of Season 2 Kids Edition of Star Ka Na in the UAE in 2015, 3rd placer winner of Sing Pilipinas City Championship Dubai 2016. She has also participated in Wafi Superstar 2017 (Singing Category), Dubai Dubai Musikahan 3 2018 (DDM3) as a song interpreter, Battle of the Bands at Eskinita.

Currently in Grade 12 at Philippine School – Dubai, Katrina, whose favorites include Morisette, Jessie J, KZ Tandingan, Sarah Geronimo, Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey and Beyonce, is preparing for her college entrance test in the Philippines, where she is planning to take BS Human Biology as a preparatory course for Medicine.

The prize that she had won will be saved for her future development and enhancement of skills, be it her schooling or pursuing her career as a professional singer, organizers said.

Over a period of one month that the contest was held, BurJuman witnessed the immense talents its younger visitors hold as around 380 children between the ages of 4 to 16 years sang and danced to their hearts’ delight as well as showcased their talents in dramatic arts and academic field.

A panel of celebrated judges consisting of Lebanese-Romanian singer Alina K, Jay Skye from Virgin Radio, and singer and MD of Communicraft, Dharsan Shankar, were delighted by the confident performances presented on stage throughout the auditions.
