Disciplinary action to be given to rude immigration staff, BI says

The staff of the Bureau of Immigration (BI) were reminded to observe courtesy and patience when accommodating passengers in all airports across the country.

BI Deputy Commissioner Marc Red Mariñas issued the reminder following reports of BI staff being rude to passengers while conducting primary inspection at the airport.

Mariñas said the reminder goes out to all staff of the BI in all airports in the country particularly the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) which accommodates thousands of passengers per day.

Mariñas added that those in the frontline of BI must the “highest degree of constraint” towards misbehaving passengers but do not pose harm to public safety.

The deputy commissioner reminded the staff that disciplinary action will be taken against any staff who will be proven as impolite towards passengers.

Earlier, BI Commissioner Jaime Morente highlighted the reports of misbehavior of some immigration staff including the case of chess grandmaster Rogelio Antonio.

An immigration staff was reportedly rude towards Antonio after the latter interrupted the staff who was playing a mobile game. Antonio explained that he was only asking a question to the staff about the location of the refund office.

Mariñas, however, also reminded passengers to be patient during inspection and to not be rude to immigration staff as well.

  1. These shows the poor quality of governance Philippines has knowing the the window of the world is the Airport and any experiences will be taken and be shared to other people around the world

  2. There was a rude guy at immigration who didn’t care that I was traveling with my young son and baby daughter and I was having a hard time filling out the forms. I’m Filipina butI don’t speak Tagalog so I asked politely in English but I kept getting answered back in Tagalog in a very rude way and apparently the meaning was “Get out of here. Go sign the form somewhere else.” It was incredibly frustrating and demeaning. Thankfully, the lady at the diplomat counter took pity on me and helped me even though my diplomatic passport was expired. Shame on those who don’t have any compassion for parents traveling with young children!

    1. I agree. I also had the experience from a very arrogant BI personnel. I believe the airport cameras should be pointed 24hrs on this personnel so their bad behaviors can be monitored. This way they can be dismissed and replaced to give the chance to new candidates for the job. I am sure there are better employees who can perform better and would make the bureau more professionals.
