Proposed 3 new regional airports seek DOTr approval

The construction of the proposed three new regional airports in the Philippines is currently under review by the Department of Transportation (DOTr).

Transportation Undersecretary for Aviation Manuel Antonio L. Tamayo said Chelsea Logistics Holdings Corp. (CLC), Aboitiz InfraCapital, Inc. and Mega7 Construction Corp. submitted a proposal to develop, operate and manage Davao International Airport, New Bohol (Panglao) International Airport and Kalibo International Airport, respectively, reported Business World.

Tamayo said that the proposals are still under review and the decision will be released by the third quarter of the year.

“Lalo Davao minamadali natin. [Third quarter], hopefully. Sabay-sabay with Bohol, Kalibo. Lahat advanced stage na (We’re trying to fast-track Davao. [Third quarter], hopefully, together with Bohol and Kalibo. All of them are in advanced stages),” Tamayo said.

“We’re looking at the proposal, we’re looking at the numbers, and we’re looking at the performance of [the airports] when [the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines] is running it. If at net present value they give us a better offer than [with] government doing it, then we will turn it over,” he added.

In June, DOTr opened Terminal 2 of the Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA) which has been dubbed as the “World’s Friendliest Resort Airport” to lessen congestion of passengers and showcase Filipino creativity, ingenuity, and hospitality through its architectural designs inspired by Cebu’s rich culture and heritage.

The structure of the 65,000-sqm terminal was created from arched beams made of glulam wood instead of traditional steel.

The terminal is expected to boost the airport’s current passenger capacity to 12.5 million from 4.5 million, within MCIA’s goal of 11.2 million passenger traffic this year.
