A 130,000 square-foot indoor farm will break ground on November near the Al Maktoum International Airport at Dubai World Central.

Crop One Holdings, in partnership with Emirates Flight Catering (EKFC) funded the $140 million farming facility, reported CNN.

The project is a proposed solution to the scarcity of water in the area as EKFC and Crop One engineered the facility to use 99% less water than outdoor farms. The temperature, humidity, light, and water will be provided in a controlled environment. The plants will also grow using nutrient solutions.

An expected harvest of 6,000 pounds will supply airport lounges and in-flight meals, boasting to an equivalent to the production of 900 acres of farmland.

The project will finish construction in December 2019 and will deliver to the customers of Emirates Flight Catering.
