Filipino kids bag 33 medals, awards abroad

A team of young Filipino math wizards took home 33 medals and awards during the 2018 Bulgaria International Mathematics Competition (BIMC) held in Burgas, Bulgaria from July 1-6.

The Mathematics Trainers Guild Philippines (MTG) proudly announced that the group of Filipino student they trained bagged one champion, two first runners-up and five second runners-up trophies in the group and team competition.

Ethan Jared Chan from the British School Manila won a gold medal for the individual contest while Jose Lorenzo Abad from the Philippine Science High School-Main, John Florence Dizon from Calamba Elementary School, Lance Heinrich Lim from Saint Jude Catholic School, Stephen James Ty from Zamboanga Chong Hua High School all got silver medals.

Bronze medalists are Sea Kendrick Yeo from PACE Academy, Armea Helena Sien Dimayacyac from Notre Dame of Greater Manila, Frederick Ivan Tan from Philippine Science High School-Main, Gregory Charles Tiong from Saint Jude Catholic School, Naomi Anne King from Saint Jude Catholic School, Maria Monica Manlises from St. Stephen’s High School, Ralde Anuel Bautista from MGC New Life Christian Academy, Sarji Elijah Bona from Palawan Hope Christian School, Sted Micah Cheng from Hope Christian High School, Vanessa Ryanne Julio from Saint Jude Catholic School, and Justin Teng Soon Khoo from Regional Science High School III.

Merit awards were given to Dillion Keller Chan from UNO High School, Alexandra Brianne Gochian from Saint Jude Catholic School, Krystal Lim Tiong Soon from Grace Christian College, Ambrose James Torreon from Rainbow of Angels, Benjamin Jacob from St. Philomena Academy of Lipa, Dominic Lawrence Bermudez from Philippine Science High School-Main, Annika Angela Mei Tamayo from Ateneo de Iloilo, and International Girls’ Team A’s Angelene Erika Madrazo from Zamboanga Chong Hua High School and Trisha Danielle Sia from Chiang Kai Shek College.

Meanwhile, Philippine Team B in the high school division, Abad, King, Manlises and Ty, emerged as champion in the group contest and second runner-up in the team contest.

Tamayo, Khoo, Julio and Bermudez won first runner-up in the team contest while Madrazo bagged first runner-up as a member of the International Girls’ Team A.

The second runner-up in the team contest are Benn Jethro Sia from Kong Hua School, Jence Enrico Dela Fuente from Ateneo de Naga University Grade School, Marco Erano Dumale from De La Salle University-Laguna, Dillion Keller Chan, Ethan Jared Chan, Yeo, Dimayacyac, Dizon, Jacob, Lim, Tan, Tiong and Sia.

Chan said he was shocked when he got the gold medal.

“Filipino students showed great performance in the contest and we are proud of their latest achievement. They trained hard for the competition,” said Dr. Isidro Aguilar, MTG president.
