Duterte laments crime figure in survey

President Rodrigo Duterte said he is worthless following the results of the First Quarter 2018 Social Weather Survey (SWS) which revealed that 1.5 million families in the Philippines became victims of crime.

Speaking before the newly-elected barangay captains in Zamboanga del Sur, Duterte expressed his disappointment over the continuous prevalence of crime in the country.

“’Pag ganito, wala akong silbi,” Duterte said.

Duterte also called on the elected officials in Zamboanga del Sur to resign with him.

“I’ll ask you to join me, mag-resign na lang tayo,” Duterte added.

Duterte, however, explained that the results of the survey showed the need for the public officials to do their jobs in eradicating crime and drugs in their respective communities, which is Duterte’s campaign promise in 2016.

“There seems to be a semblance of a republic and a nation but inside it’s topsy-turvy. It’s crime ridden,” said Duterte.

“Their conclusion is, people are usually afraid to go out at night or to walk the streets because of the crime…So how do we deal with this problem?” said Duterte.

Duterte’s reaction to the results of the survey is different from Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque who chose to look at the decline in the number of victims of crime rather than the continuous existence of crime in the country.

“We welcome the latest Social Weather Stations survey showing 6.6% of families reporting victimization by any of the crimes within the past 6 months – down from December 2017’s 7.6%,” Roque said on Thursday, June 21.
