Consulate General’s Office to get additional staff

DUBAI: To keep up with the demand of its tasks – from consular services to the Assistance to Nationals section – the Philippine Consulate General (PCG) in Dubai will be receiving additional staff from the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) home office in Manila.

Consul General Paul Raymund Cortes told The Filipino Times the reinforcement is meant to beef up PCG’s current staff of about 48 employees, including 33 from the home office.

Cortes said PCG is among the busiest Philippine diplomatic posts across the globe attending to an estimated 500,000 overseas Filipinos.

“The records show that the passport operations of Dubai is the largest among all the foreign service posts all over the world,” said Cortes.  “When you include Manila and the regional consular offices, only DFA Aseana processes more passports than Dubai,” he added, referring to the department’s consular affairs office opened, January this year in Aseana Business Park, Parañaque City to augment passport processing operations.

“Last year, we had something like 73,000 passports (issued) and it grows larger and larger. Obviously, when you want to serve the public more  efficiently you are looking at more resources sana to deploy,” Cortes said.

“We are hiring quite a number of people this second semester. We were given the go signal so we are adding more people to help us in our consular operations to make it smoother and more efficient,” he added.

Cortes said PCG attended to 6,500 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs)  who sought help from the post’s ATN section last year

“We gave assistance to those looking for resolution with their labor issues, immigration like overstaying, and  baby cases,” Cortes said.
