Filipino community hails Dubai Immigration’s move to be closer with OFWs

by | News

The problem with many Filipinos’ confusion or lack of information in matters relating to immigration is not that the information is lacking, but that Filipinos generally feel intimidated and shy, even afraid to approach the right office.

Filipino community leaders hailed the move by General Directorate of Residency and Foreign Affairs (GDRFA) Director, Maj. General Mohammed Ahmed Al-Marri to get closer to the Filipino community as a “move in the right direction,”

“It’s a good reassurance for us. Even prior to this announcement, overseas Filipino Workers have been relying on GDRFA’s customer inquiry services. The more channels to get information the better. Knowing the rules in a foreign country is a must for expatriates,” said lawyer Barney Almazar of Gulf Law.

Roy Tamano

“Also,” he added, “this will give more confidence to those who are overstaying to approach the authorities and legalize their residency.”

“This is good news:  a government sector has been sensitive enough to assist OFWs with regard to their immigration concerns,” said Dr. Rommel Pilapil Sergio, 2016 The Filipino Times Educator of the Year and Chair and Associate Professor at Canadian University of Dubai.

“I know that the government has taken steps to resolve issues hand-in -hand with our Philippine Consulate office but it is still encouraging to see how they publicize their intention to help,” he added.

Vagelyn Federico, multi-awarded OFW and 2015 The Filipino Times Hotel Professional of the Year, welcomed the Maj. General Al-Marri’s pronouncements saying the official could be reciprocating to the community, noting that Filipinos  “are considered as among the majority groups in Dubai and one of the preferred employees if not the most preferred employees.”

“So, it is really important that the government shows its interest for our welfare,” she said.

“This is a move in the right direction,” said Dr. Rex Venard Bacarra, Dean of General Education at The American College of Dubai.

“More than the information, it is the welcoming stance of the concerned government agency office itself. The problem with many Filipinos’ confusion or lack of information in matters relating to immigration is not that the information is lacking, but that Filipinos generally feel intimidated and shy, even afraid to approach the right office.

“Laws, without the warmth of human implementation, are generally cold at their core, and are taken with fear and indifference instead of as guides and instructions. This is why the initiative of the immigration office will bring that assurance to the Filipinos that we should be more mindful and not afraid to ask for clarification and better understanding,” he added.

Albert Alba

“This is a welcome news,” said Roy Tamano, Maranao Community adviser. “Considering our sizable population here, its really high time that the UAE government look into these immigration matters and for us Filipino expats to cooperate with them and always abide by the rules and regulations set by them,” he added.

“This is great news!” said Albert Alba, another long-time resident who also is a digital marketing and communications manager. He added, “Such measures will ensure that any visa or immigration issues and concerns that Filipinos may have will be responded to with correct and accurate information.

“This will certainly minimize, if not totally eradicate, any potential violation as a result of any misinformation or misunderstanding of UAE visa or immigration policies. This will also facilitate better knowledge on how to secure visas in the UAE. More importantly, it will encourage interaction between the Immigration department and the Filipino community.”
