This country approves law banning full-face veil in public spaces

The ban on wearing burqa and niqab in public spaces in Denmark will take into effect starting August 1 after its parliament passed a law that will prohibit women in wearing a full-face veil in public.

The law was backed by the Social Democrats and the far-right Danish People’s Party, earning a 75 to 30 vote last Thursday, reported Reuters.

This law makes Denmark the latest European country to do so. France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Bulgaria and the German state of Bavaria have all inked laws imposing some restrictions on full-face veils in public places.

France was the first European country to ban the niqab in public places with a law that took effect in 2011.

Under this law, “Anyone who wears a garment that hides the face in public will be punished with a fine” ranging from 1,000 Danish crowns ($160) for a first offence to 10,000 crowns for a fourth violation.
