A number of exploration studies, including a research conducted by American Oil Engineers in cooperation with Haribon Foundation, believe that a huge natural gas reserve in Maguindanao can rake in as much as US$1 trillion or roughly around Php52 trillion.

Maguindanao (2nd District) Rep. Zajid ‘Dong’ Mangudadatu said the area beneath Lake Buluan in Liguasan Marsh may contain oil and coal if deeper digging is made.

For now, he said the local government distributed cooking stoves to residents to maximize the natural gas gushing from the site.

In his interview with DZMM’s Dos Por Dos last May 21, the representative said: “Based on a Department of Energy exploratory project conducted by Philippine National Oil Company in 1994, they came out with a prospect of 68 billion cubic feet of natural gas in Liguasan Marsh.”

He cited another study conducted in the year 2002, which estimates that 583 billion barrels of natural gas can be produced in Liguasan Marsh.

Mangudadatu said the success of Liguasan would be for the entire country as he envisions this place in Maguindanao as “the next Dubai”.

However, the representative might be referring to other emirates in the UAE like its capital Abu Dhabi, which has more oil reserves, as per experts.
