Solon calls for review of DFA, DOLE mandate after PH-Kuwait labor rift

A lawmaker wants to review the mandate of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) particularly on protecting overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).

Angkla party-list representative Jesulito Manalo filed a resolution that seeks to review the tasks of DFA and DOLE following the labor ordeal with Kuwait.

Manalo said the resolution aims to “look into our diplomatic protocols, as well as the factors which contributed to the diplomatic issue” to avoid similar circumstances in the future.

During the labor ordeal with Kuwait, DOLE was heavily involved in the repatriation efforts and the amnesty program for OFWs, and the imposition of the deployment ban to Kuwait.

Meanwhile, the DFA faced problems when a video of the alleged uncoordinated rescue of OFWs in the Gulf state was released to the media and then uploaded on the internet, a move the Kuwaiti government tagged as “inappropriate behavior.”

Kuwait then moved for the expulsion of Philippine Ambassador Renato Villa, who was also declared persona non grata there.
