Deployment ban to Kuwait to stay ‘permanently’, Duterte says

President Rodrigo Duterte said on Sunday, April 29, that the deployment ban of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to Kuwait should remain ‘permanently’ amid the growing tension between the two countries.

Duterte repeated his call for all OFWs in Kuwait to return to the Philippines, saying there are other opportunities in other countries that will ensure their security.

“The ban stays permanently,” Duterte told reporters at the Francisco Bangoy International Airport in his hometown of Davao City.

“There will be no more recruitment especially for domestic workers,” he added, referring to the recruitment of Kuwait OFWs.

The president said he will try his hardest to convince China to hire more Filipino workers.

Duterte began his call for OFWs to return home after Philippine ambassador Renato Villa was declared ‘persona non-grata’ in Kuwait after his failure to act on the uncoordinated rescue of OFWs in the Gulf state.

The president also said he is willing to take the blame for the rift between the two countries.
