World Bank: Deployment ban in Kuwait unlikely to put dent on OFW remittances

World Bank said the Philippines’ decision to impose deployment ban to Kuwait will unlikely put a dent on the influx of remitances to the country.

In its recent report April 2018 Migration and Development Brief, World Bank noted that “the impact on remittance inflows of a recent ban on deploying Filipino workers to Kuwait is likely to be muted, given the country’s relatively small exposure to the Gulf Cooperation Council country.”

The report highlighted figures that show the Philippines was the third biggest recipient of remittances in 2017, which rose 5.3-percent at $33 billion.

In February, the Philippine government imposed a total deployment ban to Kuwait following the death of Joanna Demafelis whose body was found stuffed inside a freezer in an abandoned apartment in the Gulf state.

In 2017, the Philippines was the ninth largest origin of international migrants, with six million, based on World Bank estimates
