JUST IN: Aguirre quits as DOJ secretary

Amid being under fire following the dismissal of criminal charges against alleged drug lords, Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II resigned from his post, Thursday, April 5.

President Rodrigo Duterte announced the resignation of Aguirre at an event in Malacanang, saying, “I accepted the resignation of Vit Aguirre. I’m looking for his replacement.”

Earlier today, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque Jr., in a text message to reporters, denied rumors of the sacking of the justice secretary saying that, “There was no such thing.”

Duterte expressed disappointment over the dismissal by a panel of state prosecutors of the complaints the police filed against suspected drug lords Kerwin Espinosa and Peter Lim and their co-respondents.

The President even reportedly told Aguirre that he would take the place of the drug suspects in jail if they escaped accountability.
