OFW’s family receives Php 3.8 million from Taiwan

The family of Melody Castro, a Filipina caregiver who died in the Taiwan earthquake last Feb. 6, has just received a total of Php 3.8 million from the government of Taiwan as well as from benevolent entities within the country.

In a report from Taiwan’s Central News Agency, Castro’s family had received a total of Php 3.2 million from Taiwan that includes compensation from the government, insurance claims, as well as donations from the public.

An additional Php 600,000 was received by Castro’s mother and family members in a ceremony at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (Teco), Taiwan’s de facto embassy in Manila. The money was donated by a group of Philippine-based Taiwanese businesses.

Last Feb. 6, a 6.4-magnitude earthquake hit the city of Hualien that collapsed several buildings and establishments, including the 12-storey apartment where Castro lived and worked.

Castro left behind her 8-year old daughter as well as her husband who got in a car accident and is now paralyzed.
