IN FOCUS: New UAE law for part-time jobs

Overseas workers and even those who wish to work in the UAE can now juggle day and night jobs easier thanks to a new decision approved by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratization or MOHRE.

On March 19, Nasser Bin Thani Al Hameli, Minister of Human Resources and Emiratization, signed a decision which allows companies to hire skilled workers (those who hold university degrees and higher) under part-time contracts.

The new law allows workers to have more than one part-time job without getting the approval of his or her first employers.

Was working part-time considered illegal in the UAE before?

Since 2010, UAE’s labor law has made provisions to allow workers to have a part-time job but back then workers were only allowed to have one part-time work.

Another distinction is that the old system only permits fixed terms or indefinite contracts for part-time.

What’s new with this law?

The new law will work alongside the old labor provision. The newly approved decision states that all workers who will juggle two jobs should have 48 hours of work and one day off a week.

To be clear, under the new provision, existing full-time contracts can not be converted into part-time contracts.
