Divorce bill is 50-50 in Senate, senator says

Senator Francis ‘Chiz’ Escudero said on Tuesday approval of the legalization of divorce in the country stands 50% chance in the Senate.

Escudero said the Senate has yet to have a discussion about the proposed bill. However, he feels that unlike the postponement of barangay elections in 2019, the members of the Upper Chamber have different stands on divorce bill.

“Mahabang debate iyan sa Senado dahil siguro 50-50 ang laban niyan sa Senado ‘pag dumating iyung debate at botohan,” Escudero told DZMM.

The senator also expressed that he is against the proposed bill.

“Personally ang gusto ko gawing mas affordable at mas accessible ang procesong ‘yun [ng annulment] kaysa magdagdag ng panibagong grounds ng diborso,” Escudero said.

Discussions on divorce bill in the Senate is expected to begin in May.

The House of Representatives on Monday approved on third and final reading the bill that seeks to introduce divorce and dissolution of marriage in the country.

With a vote of 134-57-2, the House approved the House Bill 7303, or the proposed “Act Instituting Absolute Divorce and Dissolution of Marriage in the Philippines,” which is primarily authored by House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez and Albay Rep. Edcel Lagman.

The bill aims to allow couples to obtain “absolute divorce” after a broken marriage.
