Here’s what Filipinos in UAE say about legalization of divorce in PH

A little over 80% of Filipinos in the UAE agree that divorce should be legalized in the Philippines, according to a straw poll conducted by The Filipino Times.

Many of those who agreed on the issue said that if there are valid grounds to end the marriage, couples should be allowed to file for divorce.

One user, Emelie Llanto, pointed out that passage of divorce laws in the Philippines equates to fairness towards women, especially those in abusive relationships.

“With valid grounds, why not p[a]ra fair din s[a] mga kababaihan lalo’t may mga battered wife,” one user said.

“Yes approve po ako dyan sa divorce, matigil na pang-aabuso at pananakit [sa] pisikal at mentalidad,” Aimee Aquino commented.

Some users, however, agree to the passage of the divorce bill but with reservations. According to Eva Valverde, couples should be allowed to split up. However, financial responsibilities towards their children should always be observed.

Social Weather Station (SWS) recently conducted a survey on the same topic which showed 53% of Filipinos are for legalization of divorce in the country.

SWS added that support for legalization of divorce was “very strong” among men and women with live-in partners, and widowed or separated men.

The survey was conducted after a House of Representatives committee submitted for plenary deliberations a bill legalizing divorce in the country.
