Filipino doctor realizes this man is not just a random stranger

A doctor in Manila inspired many netizens after sharing his encounter with a pedicab driver who he thought was just a random stranger.

Dr. Jimmy Dumlao was walking along Intramuros when the “padyak” driver stopped in front of him. “Excuse me po, Sir,” the man told the doctor.

Since he didn’t recognize him, the doctor ignored the man. But as he took steps away from him, the pedicab driver, called him again. “Doc!” the man shouted.

Apparently the pedicab driver is the father of one of Dr. Dumlao’s patients at the Philippine General Hospital who narrowly escaped a health condition during his early years as a pediatrician, around 8 years ago.

In 2010, the pedicab driver’s son was rushed to the hospital after suffering from TB meningitis. It was Dumlao who saved his son’s life. The father told Dr. Dumlao that his son is now doing better and has grown up.

“Nalampasan nya po yung TB meningitis nya. Malaki na po sya ngayon! Alagain nga lang sya dahil sa naging sakitin, pero masaya po kaming nakauwi sya nun! Salamat po. At kumusta din po kay Dra Santos,” the father told Dumlao.

In his Facebook post, the doctor reflected that the encounter with the man he thought was a random stranger turned out to be an “extremely inspiring and humbling moment”. He said that the years of hard training in the hospital seems to have become all worth it when patients recognize your help.
