Dubai International Airport to close runway for 45 days

The Dubai International Airport (DXB), dubbed as the world’s busiest airport, has scheduled to close one of its two runways for 45 days due to a refurbishment project.

Dubai Airports announced that the southern runway will be closed from April to May 2019 for resurfacing and replacement of ground lighting.

The said project aims to “boost safety, service, and capacity levels” of the runway which handled over 88 million passengers last year.

During those 45 days, flights will be diverted through Dubai World Central – Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC).

According to Dubai Airports, they chose the timing of the maintenance project “when passenger traffic historically ebbs due to a seasonal lull”.

“In the months ahead we will be working closely with Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects, airlines and other stakeholders to ensure we optimise service and capacity during this period next year and minimise the impact on our customers.

“While we regret any inconvenience this may cause to our airline customers and our passengers, these upgrades are absolutely necessary to heighten safety, boost capacity and pave the way for future growth.” Paul Griffiths, Dubai Airports CEO, said.

According to Dubai Airports, the said refurbishment will include the placement of 60,000 tonnes of asphalt, and 8,000 cubic meter of concrete.

DXB currently operates more than 1,100 aircraft movement and runs for 24 hours a day.
