Kuwaiti authorities file murder charges against Demafelis’ employers

Philippine Ambassador to Kuwait Renato Villa confirmed Sunday that Kuwaiti officials will pursue charges against suspects in overseas Filipino worker (OFW) Joanna Demafelis death.

In an interview with CNN Philippines, Villa said that he learned of this development from a Kuwaiti security official.

Moreover, Villa revealed that the Embassy will form a team of lawyers to help in the prosecution and extradition of Demafelis’ employers to Kuwait.

“Sabi ng Kuwaiti authorities, they will ask for the extradition nung dalawa sa Kuwait. But, sabi rin nila, malamang, of course, baka may batas rin yung dalawang bansang yun preventing yung extradition nila dito sa Kuwait for trial,” Villa said.

“Meron naman tayong embahada rin sa Beirut at pati na rin sa Damascus, then maybe they can help in that regard.”

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) confirmed Saturday night the arrest of the female employer of Demafelis, Mona Hassoun. DFA also said that Hassoun is currently in the custody of Syrian authorities.

On Friday, February 23, the Philippine Embassy in Kuwait reported the arrest of male employer of Demafelis, Assaf, to Manila the same day Pre. Rodrigo Duterte visited the wake of Demafelis.
