Having labor issues? Here’s how to seek help

DUBAI: If you have any work-related issues like abuse, non-payment of wages, undesirable working conditions or disputes with your employer, call the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation at 800 66 473 or the Labor Complaints Service of the Dubai Police’s Human Rights Department at 901.

This, according to a handbook of do’s and don’ts as well as contact details of concerned departments and emergency agencies released by the Government of Dubai.

The handbook also enables foreign workers to discern “what they should and should not do” when in the emirate.

“This handbook has been issued according to the strategy of the Dubai government to make everybody aware about the laws and regulation here,” Major General Obaid Bin Suroor, deputy director of the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) told The Filipino Times in an interview following the presentation of the handbook at a press conference held Feb.15 at The Address Boulevard Hotel.

The top ranking official, who also heads the Permanent Committee of Labour Affairs in Dubai, said it pays for a foreign worker to know the rules through the pocket-sized handbook that will be given them after attending an awareness class as part of the processing of their employment documents.

The 57-page handbook, which also outlines local culture with copies available in English, Arabic and Urdu, will keep foreign workers from having brushes with the law, said Maj. Gen. Suroor.

“It’s about what they should and what they should not do,” said the official.

The handbook, entitled, “A Guide for Foreign Workers,” is divided in five parts, the first of which extensively discusses the laws pertaining to residency status, work permit, the Emirates ID card, recruitment stage, wages, leaves of absence and overtime pay among others.

A portion is also dedicated to understanding cultural and societal values in the UAE as well as help hotlines.
