Dubai Police to launch cameras equipped with face recognition, analyze crimes

Thousands of surveillance cameras that recognize face and analyze movements will be launched Dubai police to make Dubai the world’s safest city.

On Saturday, January 27, 2018, Dubai Police said the Oyoon project, which is set to be implemented in 2018 and 2019, are cameras with artificial intelligence fitted to play a major role in reducing the crime rate and traffic violations in the city, reported The National.

If a person is suspected of committing crime-related activities, the camera send its findings immediately to the control room of the Dubai police.

“Of those criminal activity-related cameras, microphones will be connected to cameras to warn criminals. If a person is trying to steal, for example, a voice message from the microphone will tell the person that he or she is being watched by policemen,” Brig Jamal Al Muhairi, deputy director of administrative affairs at Dubai Police, was quoted to have said in the report.

Meanwhile, Dubai motorists will also be monitored for traffic violations as the cameras have the ability to read license plate numbers.

Dubai police will implement the project together with government and semi-government departments and the private sector.
