Kuwait government has expressed its remorse on Philippines decision to ban deployment of overseas Filipino workers (OFW) in the country.
Deputy Foreign Minister Khaled Al-Jarallah stated that legal measures were already taken regarding the cases of the four Filipinos who died in Kuwait, which prompted President Rodrigo Duterte to ban OFW deployment in the country.
Al-Jarallah also said that his department had immediately reached out to the Philippines authorities to discuss the issue and debunk false information. Despite the issue, Al-jarallah affirms that Kuwait and the Philippines maintain to have distinguished ties.
These cases “cannot be used as a criterion to assess the overall status of the Philippines’ workers in the country,” he added.
Kuwait government reiterated that they have laws and regulations that protect expatriates from any abuse, and preserve rights including of the OFWs, to establish good relationship with their employers.
Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III ordered the ban last Friday, January 19, following President Duterte’s speech at the opening of the OFW Bank, citing the death of four migrant workers in Kuwait.
