Vinta strikes southern PH; leaves 182 dead

Around 200 people died and thousands of family lost their homes after typhoon ‘Vinta’ strikes southern Philippines before Christmas.

Majority of the casualties was caused by landslides and flash floods reported in major provinces including Lanao del Norte and Zamboanga del Norte.

According to Red Cross, at least 182 are reported dead, around 150 people are missing and 40,000 have evacuated.

Meanwhile, the toll of death in Zamboanga del Norte rose to 59 while 26 are still missing due to sudden rise of water.

Provincial officer Ryne Gustillo said that the residents were warned before the typhoon hit the province, however, some residents who resides in the mountains were not expecting the surge, ABS CBN reported.

Tropical storm Vinta, with international name Tembin, hit the country less than a week after typhoon Urduja left the Philippines.

Vinta has exited Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) earlier today at a speed of 25 kilometers per hour, leaving thousands of families displaced at Christmas day.
