Prescription soon to be required when buying contraceptives in Dubai

Dubai authorities are pushing to reduce public access to birth control pills by requiring a medical prescription from the buyer.

According to a Gulf Business report, the Dubai Health Authority has been checking if pharmacies are still selling the pill over the counter.

Previously, restriction was lax when it comes to access to these pills despite UAE declaring premarital sex as illegal, said the report.

According to an article on Emirates Woman, pharmacists did not ask whether the buyer was married or not.

Prescriptions are also needed in purchasing contraceptives in Abu Dhabi.
