Alleged accomplice of runaway OFWs jailed in Oman

An overseas Filipino worker (OFW) has been detained in Oman for allegedly aiding the escape of her two Filipino co-workers “who stole jewelry and cash from their employer”.

Hazel Marcelino, who works as a sales and marketing agent for a clothing store, has been charged with breach of trust following the disappearance of her compatriots.

According to her mother, Marcelino had already been planning to resign from the company due to health issues. However, things did not go as planned after the employer blamed her daughter for the escape of the two.

“Minsan umiiyak yung kasama niya kasi napapagalitan ng boss niya. Nung ginigising niya daw yung dalawa, pag-angat niya ng kumot, unan na lang,” Marlyn Marcelino, her mother, said.

The employer was able to find out that she had been an accessory to the crime because she was able to get her passport, which, the employer said, was kept in a box together with the passports of the two other Filipinos and the missing items.

She initially denied the accusation, but eventually surrendered her passport to authorities.

Because of this, the employer filed theft charges against her.

The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) vowed to provide legal assistance to Marcelino.

“We instructed our Welfare Officer to visit Hazel at the detention center. We’ll coordinate with her agency to come up with a comprehensive assistance plan,” OWWA Deputy Administrator Josefino Torres was quoted as saying.

In Oman, theft and breach of trust are punishable by temporary imprisonment of three to 15 years, life imprisonment, or the death penalty.

Asian accused of stealing employer’s diamond necklace in Dubai

by  | News

A Filipina maid in Dubai pleaded not guilty before the Dubai Court of First Instance after her American employer accused her of stealing her lost diamond necklace.

The 28-year-old Filipina was accused of stealing her employer’s Dh5,000-worth of diamond necklace after the latter found her lost jewelry worn by the former in a photo posted on Facebook.

“I did not steal anything from them…They asked me if I wanted to stay working for them, but when I told them no and asked them to fly me back home … they got angry and decided to complain. I didn’t take anything,” Gulf News quoted the Filipina maid, defending herself before judge Urfan Omar.

The Filipina said she bought the diamond necklace from a jewelry store in Satwa. However, when the police visited the store, the owner said they don’t sell that type of necklace.

The American employer said her maid ran away in March 2016. She was not sure at that time if her maid also stole her missing jewelry and valuables until she checked her Facebook.

She reported the Filipina to the police immediately. The Filipina was arrested on July 17, a year and a half after leaving her employer.

Prosecutors also accused the Filipina of stealing a bracelet worth Dh3,700, a fragrance worth Dh600, and Dh600 cash.

The ruling for this case will be heard on October 16.
