90% of Filipino nurses accepted to UK hospital fail English test

Medway Maritime Hospital in Kent, United Kingdom said 52 out of the 59 Filipino nurses they recruited had failed one or more of their language tests, BBC reported on Tuesday, September 26.

The 59 Filipino nurses are part of the 202 nurses recruited by the Medway NHS Foundation Trust in April.

Only seven passed the hospital’s listening, reading, writing, and speaking tests in English.

“As part of our own selection process, we ensure that candidates are able to communicate effectively with patients and each other,” James Devine, executive director of the Medway NHS Foundation Trust, was quoted as saying.

A spokesperson for the NHS Trust said candidates who failed intend to retake the tests while other candidates are still awaiting their results.

Nurses not trained in a European Union (EU) country are required to achieve a score of at least seven out of a possible nine in all parts of the test.
