DOJ, San Miguel eye 2,500-hectare airport in Bulacan

The Department of Transportation and San Miguel Corporation are currently in talks for the latter’s proposal to build an international airport in Bulacan, Department of Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade has revealed.

In the proposal, the P700-billion airport will be built on a 2,500-hectare parcel of land in Bulakan, Bulacan. It would also have four parallel runways with a provision for two more if required.

The airport, which could be built within six years, can accommodate up to 200 million passengers per year.

“We are now in talks within the context of an unsolicited proposal,” Philippine Daily Inquirer quoted Tugade as saying.

This proposal aims to help decongest the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), which handles more than 40 million passengers annually.

NAIA’s design is said to only handle 30 million passengers.

Air transport delays in NAIA already cost airlines for an estimated amount of P1.1 billion per year and chances are, it would increase to P3.8 billion by 2020 if the airport would not improve.
