After a public hospital in Pampanga set up a wing dedicated providing treatment and serving the needs of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) previously reported by The Filipino Times, more public hospitals have expressed their interest in establishing a special ward dedicated to migrant workers.
Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Paulyn Ubial and ACTS-OFW Partylist Rep. Aniceto Bertiz III, the proponent of House Bill 3678 or the “Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) Hospital Act of 2013”, signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) on Monday, September 11, to set up a dedicated wing or ward for OFWs in 70 public hospitals before the end of the year,
Ubial said the project is a part of the department’s program for migrant health, providing service to OFWs in need of medical examination to go abroad. The special hospital wards will also be open to former OFWs.
“Having a special ward for OFWs is a way of giving importance to our modern heroes,” Inquirer quoted Ubial as saying.
The health secretary added that President Rodrigo Duterte and Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano have agreed to send health attachés to countries like Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, United States, Switzerland, among others.
“Napag-usapan po namin sa last Cabinet meeting na sinang-ayunan ni pangulo at ng DFA secretary natin na magkaroon tayo ng health attaché sa iilang mga bansa na maraming OFW,” GMA News quoted Ubial as saying.
