Vice President Leni Robredo said the Marcoses should apologize for the atrocities they committed before they consider seeking immunity for returning their alleged ill-gotten wealth.
In a chance interview with ABS-CBN, Robredo said the Marcoses should admit the wrongful deeds they have committed to the Filipino people. She said it would be hard to forgive them if they are not willing to owe up to their mistakes.
“Kailangan nating intindihin na napakalaki noong ninakaw sa taumbayan, na bago pa man pag-usapan iyong forgiveness, iyong pagpapatawad, kailangang aminin muna na talagang nagkasala sa taumbayan,” she said.
President Rodrigo Duterte said on September 5 that the Marcoses would return their alleged ill-gotten wealth and gold bars. This, the president said, would be possible if they would be protected from possible prosecution.
“Itong mga Marcos, hindi ito papayag na isauli tapos ikulong sila. ‘Isauli ko pero huwag mo ako kulungin,'” Duterte said to reporters.
The Presidential Commission on Good Government has already recovered P170 billion pesos of the family’s ill-gotten wealth, as well as jewelry, art and other assets for 30 years already.
