Son of OFW in Dubai tagged as ‘robber’, ‘drug user’; shot dead in Navotas

Eva Magat Arnaiz, an OFW who works in a salon in Dubai for five years, went back to the Philippines to search for her 19-year old missing son, Carl Angelo “Gelo” Arnaiz.

While his father Lito Arnaiz travelled all the way from Leyte to Manila to help looking for his son.

Around 12 midnight of August 17, Gelo told his sister he was going out with friends to buy snacks; not knowing that it would be the last time she would see him alive.

On August 28, Ezekiel Funeral Home saw a post about the missing 19-year-old boy through Facebook and immediately contacted the family to confirm if the body they have was Gelo’s.

Gelo allegedly robbed a taxi driver, Tomas Bagcal, hitting the back of his head with .38 cal. Pistol then took his wallet in Navotas City around 3:20 am.

Bagcal was able to ask help from the policemen, but Gelo allegely fired forcing the police to shoot him.

Police found three plastic sachets of “shabu” and two packets of marijuana leaves along with Bagcal’s wallet inside a backpack in the scene.

Investigators now think these drugs help Gelo as antidepressants after his mother told police that he dropped out from the University of the Philippines to deal with depression.

In an interview with The Filipino Times, Lito Arnaiz denied this accusation saying his son’s only vice is smoking cigarette.

“Hindi po ‘yun gumagamit kasi may sarili siyang gamot. May regular siyang check-up tsaka may maintenance siyang gamot,” added Lito.

The family already asked help from the Commission of Human Rights and was told they will be investigating Gelo’s case.

Gelo graduated valedictorian in elementary, went to Makati Science High School, and a student of the University of the Philippines.
