Dubai authorities reveal cause of Torch tower fire

Dubai Police said the fire that ripped through the Torch tower in Dubai, one of the world’s tallest building, in Dubai Marina on August 4, was caused by cigarette butts thrown into a potted plant in a balcony.

To prove this conclusion, police conducted a similar experiment of throwing a cigarette butt in a pot and how it could lead to a fire.

Major General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police, said security staff of establishments should be trained more in safety procedures in order to prevent death, property damages, and financial losses.

“The security guards are responsible for the safety of residential buildings. The last Torch Tower fire saw financial losses, especially to cars that were badly damaged because they were wrongly parked,” Gulf News quoted Major General Al Marri as saying.

Dubai Police said the sources of fire in high-rise building like the Torch Tower often starts in sauna rooms, waste rooms, and electrical rooms.

The fire in Torch Tower reached across the structural façade of the 87-storey building, forcing 475 people to evacuate for their safety.

No serious injuries were reported on the incident.
