LTO kicks off distribution of 5-year drivers license

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) is all set to distribute the first batch of drivers licenses with five-year validity.

Earlier this month, President Rodrigo Duterte signed the Republic Act 10940, which extends the validity of driver’s’ licenses from three years to five years.

Starting August 29 (Tuesday), LTO’s main office in Quezon City will cater to up to 400 walk-ins who apply or renew their licenses.

However, LTO chief Edgar Galvante said the issuance of five-year cards will be limited for those who will apply for renewal for now.

Galvante said by October, all LTO offices shall start processing the licenses with a five-year validity by October.

“By next week, the whole of Metro Manila. By middle of September, we have Regions 3, 4-A, and 11. Then sometime in October, the rest of the Philippines,” he added.

Under the RA 10930, professional and non-professional drivers with no records of violations are eligible to apply for a 10-year license upon renewal.

The extension, however, does not include student permits.
