Filipino saves 2 drowning Chinese as storm and heavy flood batter Macau

Filipinos are known around the world not only for being industrious and diligent, but also for helping those in need; thus the terms “bayanihan” and “bayani” were coined.

This unique Filipino trait has been proven time and again after a Filipino saved two Chinese nationals who were trapped in the middle of a flood in Macau.

Loreto Mijares Jr., who hails from Northern Samar, risked his life in order to save a Chinese who was submerged in the flood.

Mijares said the couple, who are in their mid-70s, were returning from the market when the flood suddenly rose.

“I was scared because it was my first time to face a typhoon and had no experience in saving drowning people in a mass flood. I am also not a professional swimmer, so it was hard for me. But I couldn’t resist, I just knew I needed to save them anyhow,” Mijares told in an interview with Rappler.

The video, which was filmed by his wife Jhunnafe, also shows Loreto using ropes from the third floor of a building to rescue the partner of the  Chinese he first saved out of danger.

Jhunnafe and Loreto have been working as housekeeping staff at The Parisian Macao Hotel for a year.
