‘Butas gulong’ thieves target Abu Dhabi residents —police report says

Three men were arrested by the Abu Dhabi Police for allegedly robbing women by tricking them to step out of their cars and claim that their tire was flat.

Police authorities said these Asian men aged between 23 and 38 years were arrested after two Arab women reported that their handbags were stolen from their car by unidentified men.

Brigadier Ahmed Saif bin Zaytoun Al Muhairi, Director of the Capital Police Directorate, said that the modus of the gang was simple and clever: unsuspecting drivers would be told that their tires were flat, then execute their tactic of stealing valuables inside the car.

Al Muhairi said they were able to track down the vehicle used by the suspects and arrested them through the help of their counterparts in Ajman.

It’s not the first time this method was used by con artists. In May, three men were arrested by the Abu Dhabi Police for robbing a bank customer using the same theft tactic.
