SWS: PH records lowest hunger incidence in June after 13 years

The number of Filipino families who suffered hunger has dropped to 2.2 million, the lowest number in 13 years, the latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey showed.

The second quarter 2017 SWS survey showed that percentage of families who consider themselves hungry has gone down to 9.5 percent , a 2.4 percent drop from 11.9 percent in the same period of 2016 and the lowest since March 2004, Business World reported.

The survey measured “involuntary suffering because the respondents answer a survey question that specifies hunger due to lack of food to eat”.

The SWS survey, which covered responses from 1,200 adults, stated the 9.5 percent includes families who experienced “moderate” and “severe” hunger.

“Both moderate hunger and severe hunger fell between March 2017 and June 2017. Both have been steadily declining since December 2016,” the survey said.

Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella said the Duterte administration remains in its bid to “lay down the foundation of a comfortable life for all”.

“[The survey reflected] significant headway in alleviating poverty and bringing prosperity in our first year in office. Many pro-poor and inclusive programs and projects made a dent to the lives of many families. No Filipino deserves to get hungry or experience hunger,” Business World quoted Abella as saying.
