Hospital waives Dh230,000 bill of penniless American

A private hospital in Abu Dhabi has waived the Dh230,000 bill of a homeless and penniless American patient allowing the latter to finally return home to the U.S.

The Universal Hospital in Abu Dhabi made the gesture on humanitarian grounds as Alan Clair Himes, 70, has no family, job and home. The hospital also promised to sponsor his flight ticket.

Himes racked up the huge bill for undergoing treatment for a broken back and hip between February and June 2016, reports the Khaleej Times.

A kind-hearted family provided Himes food and a room in Sharjah, Rolla as temporary home. The St Mary’s Catholic Church is also helping him.

Himes narrated that he came to the UAE in January 2015 and set up a business with a partner. But the business failed and his partner left him when he was admitted to the hospital.

Himes tried to get a job to pay the hospital bills, but no one was willing to hire him because of his age.
