His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has decreed the establishment of the International Institute for Tolerance to promote the spirit of tolerance among people in society.
Sheikh Mohammed issued the decree or Law No. 9 of 2017 together with Decree No. 23 of 2017 that establishes the institute’s Board of Trustees and Decree No. 28 of 2017 that appoints its Managing Director..
“The establishment of the International Institute for Tolerance comes at a time when we are in dire need to build bridges of tolerance and solidarity between people. The institute’s doors are open to scholars and tolerance advocates, who wish to work toward establishing a culture of tolerance and openness in our societies, and against extremism, fanaticism and intellectual repression,” WAM quoted Sheikh Mohammed as saying.
The Institute has the following functions and powers:
- to propose policies and legislation aimed at entrenching the values of tolerance and moderation in the society, and to submit them to the relevant authorities for implementation;
- periodically organize international conferences related to tolerance in the State;
- prepare and disseminate research on how to engage in partnerships with relevant cultural institutions around the world to spread the principles of harmony and the values of intergenerational tolerance;
- organize seminars, workshops, forums and specialized training programs aimed at promoting the spirit of tolerance and peace in the world;
- launch and encourage initiatives aimed at promoting tolerance and coexistence among all members of society;
- support intellectual and cultural output that promotes tolerance in society;
- create an environment that is conducive to social and cultural harmony and eliminate exclusionary behavior; and
