Cut down food waste on Ramadan, UAE urges residents

UAE government urged residents to cut down food waste during Ramadan, as the season usually doubles the amount of food wasted in the country.

Food waste during Ramadan largely contributes to an estimated Dh14.69 billion ($4 billion) food waste in the UAE every year, said Dr Thani Al Zeyoudi, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, as quoted by Gulf News.

In the global scene, the annual food waste is estimated to be Dh9.5 trillion (S2.6 trillion), said Dr Thani Al Zeyoudi, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, he added.

“Overspending during Ramadan is bad behaviour. We want to ensure people don’t waste food,” Al Zeyoudi said.

To lessen this number, the official suggested an inclusive community effort to cut down food waste.

Citizens are also encouraged to prepare what they will will only need for “ifrars” or light meals before dawn and “suhurs” or meals after sunset.
