Bill promoting ‘work-from-home’ passes final Senate reading; gets 22-0 vote

by

Being late for work due to rush-hour traffic may soon be erased from Filipinos’ long list of work-related rants.

The Senate unanimously approved on the third reading the Senate Bill 1363 or the Telecommuting Act of 2017 that seeks to ensure the protection of home-based workers and to permit “work from home” policy.

The act describes “telecommuting” as the substitution of computers or technology for the commute to work by employees.

The telecommuting law is expected to help address traffic issues in the country.

SB 1363 awaits approval from the House of Representatives. A related act has been proposed in the House, but it is still pending at the committee level.

Sen. Joel Villanueva, one of the authors of the act, clarified that if the bill becomes a law, it will not mandate employers to implement a “work from home” policy.

Employers should guarantee equal treatment for home-based and office-based workers, Villanueva added.

“Employers must ensure that measures are taken to prevent the telecommuting employees from being isolated from the rest of the working community in the company,” Rappler quoted Villanueva as saying.
