Only in Dubai: Daylight shines in this beach at night

by

It’s undeniable that Filipinos love the ocean. We’re always inspired by water — hearing its breeze, playing in it. After all, the country composes of more than seven thousand islands. But hectic schedule in the workplace hinders our kababayans to hit the beach in Dubai at daytime.

But there’s no more reason to be lonely for those who miss swimming past sundown.

Dubai Municipality has just unveiled the city’s first night swimming friendly beach in Umm Suqeim 1.

The municipality has installed two 12-meter “smart poles” that automatically provide lighting on the beach after the sunset.

Sounds cool, right? This could be another avenue for Overseas Filipinos workers (OFWs) to relax after a long day of work.

According to Jana Cantillana, an Abu Dhabi-based accountant, the project gives her a new reason to visit Dubai regularly and spend time with her friends.

“We will always choose seaside over five-star hotels. I was once based in Dubai and night swimming is among the things that I really miss about it. Now that it is safer to stay by the beach at night, my friends and I will surely spend most of our free times there,” she told The Filipino Times.

These solar-and-wind-powered poles, as well as lifeguards, will guide swimmers that will stay at the seaside until the midnight.

According to Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director General of Dubai Municipality, this aims to boost Dubai’s image as a tourist destination.

He also considers Umm Suqeim 1 Beach as a “smart Beach” considering the presence of three “smart elements”—the smart poles, the smart changing rooms, and the smart palms that provide free Internet service.

Dubai Municipality and Dubai Police initially restricted night swimming on Dubai beaches to address safety issues.
