Duterte wants deals with Russia and China, US just “double talk”

by

Before his planned visit to Moscow, President Rodrigo Duterte again recapitulated his desire to strengthen alliances with superpowers Russia and China, citing that Western nations’ interest only revolves around “double talk”.

In an interview with Russia Today, Duterte expressed that although he has nothing against the US, what the Philippines needs is a policy that’s unconstrained by American interest.

“I have nothing against America, [US President Donald] Trump is my friend. But my foreign policy has shifted. I want to deal with China and Russia. Because in Western world, it’s double talk,” he indicated.

In line with Duterte’s plan to fortify ties with China, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana signed a letter of intent for future purchases with Poly technologies- a Chinese, state-owned defense manufacturing firm.

A similar agreement with Russia is set to be sealed by President Duterte during his five-day visit in Moscow and St. Petersburg starting May 22.

“Russia sells weapons, no conditions. With the US it’s a different story. They make conditions. But I’m not gonna stand on bended knees,” he said.
