Abu Dhabi doctors save newborn baby with rare birth defect

by

Doctors in Abu Dhabi successfully saved the life of a child, who was born with parts of his intestines and liver outside his body, early Saturday.

Two weeks after being born, the baby named Zaid Bunar underwent a five-hour major surgery at Danat Al Emarat Hospital to correct his congenital malformation that caused portions of his intestine and liver to protrude in a thin membrane sac outside of his abdomen.

According to Dr. Raja Cingapagu a pediatric surgeon at the hospital, the condition was diagnosed prior to the baby’s birth.

Different specialists at the hospital–the obstetricians, the fetal medicine specialists, the pediatric surgeons and neonatologists—then prepared a treatment plan.

After this initial detection, the mother of the child was placed under observation until the delivery, which was scheduled at the 37th week of pregnancy.

Two weeks after the birth, the newborn underwent a major five-hour surgery to remove the umbilical lining and restructure the abdominal muscles before the various organs were returned to the abdominal cavity, Cingapagu explained.

“At the end of the surgery, the opening in the abdominal wall muscles was closed, while ensuring this caused no undue pressure on the other vital organs,” the doctor said.

Defects such as these happen rarely in the medical world. The condition can occur in only one in 20,000 births.

Bunar was discharged after a week in the hospital and is now recovering at home.
